COMMUNIQUE ON SITUATION IN JAPANESE EMBASSY IN LIMA

VATICAN CITY, DEC 19, 1996 (VIS) - A communique published today, regarding the hostages taken in the Japanese embassy in Lima, states that "the Holy See -which is not involved in any kind of mediation - is following with vigorous apprehension the development of the dramatic situation which has occurred in the embassy of Japan in Lima, Peru.

Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Fortunato Baldelli, as dean of the diplomatic corps, is in permanent contact with the other heads of mission and with the foreign affairs minister.

The Peruvian Episcopal Conference has published its own document.
