Al-Jazeera TV Covers Assisi Day of Prayer

ASSISI, Italy, JAN. 24, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Qatar's Al-Jazeera television channel, regarded as the CNN of the Arab world, was among the media outlet transmitting news from the Day of Prayer for Peace.

"Its presence will enable a message of peace to go where there is war," the director of the press office of the Sacred Convent of Assisi, Father Enzo Fortunato, had said Wednesday.

Al-Jazeera was the only television channel with correspondents in Afghanistan during the first phase of the anti-terrorist military operation led by the United States. It received and transmitted the controversial videos of Osama bin Laden.

The Assisi event today attracted 860 reporters, according to the requests received by the Vatican Press Office.
