Feiret messe for 20000 troende og besøkte stedet for Jesu dåp

Søndag 10. mai holdt Pave Benedikt XVI utendørsmesse på Amman internasjonale stadion for over 20 000 troende, det samme sted som Johannes Paul II også feiret messe ved sitt besøk i år 2000. Dette var den eneste offisielle messefeiring under Pavens besøk i landet, og det på en nasjonal fridag for landets 100 000 kristne. Libanesiske kristne og flyktninger fra Irak var også tilstede.

Den hellige far poengterte og priste familiens og ikke minst kvinnenes profetiske rolle i sin preken:

"An important aspect of your reflection during this Year of the Family has been the particular dignity, vocation and mission of women in God's plan. How much the Church in these lands owes to the patient, loving and faithful witness of countless Christian mothers, religious Sisters, teachers, doctors and nurses! How much your society owes to all those women who in different and at times courageous ways have devoted their lives to building peace and fostering love!"

Benedikt uttrykte sin sorg over at kvinners gudgitte verdighet og rolle ikke alltid har blitt forstått og satt pris på:

"The Church, and society as a whole has come to realize how urgently we need what the late Pope John Paul II called the `prophetic charism' of women as bearers of love, teachers of mercy and artisans of peace, bringing warmth and humanity to a world that all too often judges the value of a person by the cold criteria of usefulness and profit."

"By its public witness of respect for women, and its defense of the innate dignity of every human person, the Church in the Holy Land can make an important contribution to the advancement of a culture of true humanity and the building of the civilization of love."

Paven uttrykte støtte og oppmuntring til de troende, og oppfordret katolikker til å fortsette et liv i tro, håp og kjærlighet, og å bære vitne om det kristne budskap, i troskap til gamle kristne tradisjoner i området:

"The Catholic community here is deeply touched by the difficulties and uncertainties which affect all the people of the Middle East. May you never forget the great dignity which derives from your Christian heritage."

"May the courage of Christ our shepherd inspire and sustain you daily in your efforts to bear witness to the Christian faith and to maintain the Church's presence in the changing social fabric of these ancient lands."

200 barn mottok sin førstekommunion under messen, blant disse var også 40 irakiske barn som er flyktninger bosatt i Jordan.

Senere på dagen besøkte Paven, sammen med Kong Abdullah II og dronning Rania, stedet for Jesu dåp, Betania.

Mandag 11. mai reiser Den hellige far videre til Israel, hvor han blir mottatt på Ben Gurion internasjonale flyplass.
