Before Luxembourg was detached as an ecclesial jurisdiction of its own right, the territory has belonged to several other dioceses: Trier, Liège, Metz, Reims, Verdun, Köln, Namur. Until 1801 it was divided between Liège and Trier. From 1801 till 1823, it belonged to Metz, and from 1823 till 1840 part of Namur (but see note on 1833).
