Advocates Development of Tourism That Promotes Dialogue and Peace

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 20, 2000 (ZENIT.org).-- Tourism as a vehicle of peace and ethical values was the motivation for Millennium Week in the Holy Land.

The event is an initiative of the World Tourism Organization, which is supported by the Vatican. An international seminar is being held in Tel Aviv today and tomorrow.

The Vatican Press Office said: «The seminar will highlight the common elements that bring believing peoples of the three monotheist religions on earth closer and hopes that, in the new millennium, tourism will really become a vehicle of knowledge and mutual understanding,» the Vatican statement reads.

It added that the seminar will be transferred later to other countries, such as Palestine, Jordan and Egypt.

The Tel Aviv meeting is presenting studies on the ethical implications that surround tourism. The Vatican is represented in Tel Aviv by Msgr. Piero Monni, its permanent observer at the World Tourism Organization.

In his address during the symposium, Msgr. Monni said that tourism has a decisive role to play in promoting dialogue and the value of peace among peoples.
