TORONTO, Jul 26, 02 (CWNews.com) - Pope John Paul II had lunch on Friday with a group of 14 young people, selected from among the World Youth Day participants in Toronto.

The 14 people selected to meet the Pontiff came from all around the world, and included representatives from Canada, the US, Jordan, Sudan, Kenya, Germany, Bosnia, and Tahiti.

The luncheon, held at the Pope's temporary quarters on Strawberry Island outside the city, was a light-hearted affair, according to those who attended. At one point the Pope asked each youngster where he was staying during the World Youth Day observance. One young man replied that he was staying at the Hilton in Toronto. «That's not a bad place,» the Pope remarked. The young man prompted a gale of laughter with his reply: «But I'm sleeping in the corridor!»
