A pro-abortion group this week announced the launch of a campaign aimed at legalizing abortion in Ireland.

The Irish Family Planning Association said it plans to lobby politicians in the run-up to the next federal election expected for 2007. The IFPA also plans to capitalize on the legal case before the European Court of Human Rights, where three Irish pro-abortion activist women are seeking to have Ireland's abortion law overturned.

At a press conference at a Dublin hotel, six pro-life activists were removed by security for trying to break into the meeting while carrying placards with pro-life messages and pictures of aborted babies.

According to figures released by the UK Department of Health, 6,217 Irish women traveled to procure abortions illegally in the UK in 2004. The number represents a 1.7 percent drop as compared to 2003.

Pro Life Campaign said it was disheartened by the IFPA news. The PLC said it would welcome a plebiscite on the issue, as long as it had pro-life wording.
