THE VIOLENCE CONTINUES IN DILI (BRIEF, GENERAL)

An apparently calm night in Dili for the Salesian Missionaries. The religious community is currently hosting over 10-thousand displaced people in precarious conditions due to the lack of food supplies. However, given the growing violence in the city the atmosphere continues to be reigned by terror. Many buildings were burned to the ground. Over 60-thousand people are crowded in the police stations of the capital and in all probability will soon be evacuated with force from East Timor to Atanbura, the western sector of Timor, under Indonesian domain. In the meantime, Indonesian President Jusuf Habibie proclaimed martial law in East Timor. A move considered irrelevant considering that the country is already controlled by the Indonesian army. (BO)
