Jakarta (Fides) - Bishop Basilio do Nascimento, apostolic administrator of Baucau, is alive and well. In a conversation with Fides, Sr Hermina Wai Wanggai, whose religious house was near the Bishop's residence in Baucau, says his condition is satisfactory. The nun met the Bishop yesterday, September 9th, as she was leaving for Kupang, in West Timor. Sr Hermina, superior of the Community of the Sisters Followers of Christ, said she also met a group of Canossian Sisters of Baucau who are safe and sound .
The nun said that since the outbreak of violence, Bishop de Nascimento has been encouraging the people to move to safer places. She said the police and the army are not maltreating the people: "The paramilitary are pushing them to evacuate but without using violence" Sister Hermina left Baucau in a military aircraft filled with refugees, accompanied by two of her Religious Sisters.
